Mast Way School’s fall 2024 math club was led by Yash Joglekar, a former student who is now in 8th grade at Oyster River Middle School (ORMS).
Yash first connected with Principal Lowe and Mast Way Science and Math Coordinator Sarah Farwell to discuss his interest in giving back to his former school by teaching math to younger students. Together, they decided to launch a 4 weeklong Math Challenge Club for 3rd grade students. The club started meeting on Mondays once weekly in November 2024.
Each Math Challenge Club session starts with engaging warm-up activities followed by a challenging math problem. Sessions end with strategy games designed to help students improve their logical thinking.
Due to the overwhelming interest from students, Mast Way is now considering extending the program for another 4 weeks after winter break.
“Math has always been a passion of mine since I was in elementary school,” Yash said. “Back then, I didn’t find many opportunities to learn beyond the regular curriculum, and with my interest sparked I took Accelerated Geometry at the Oyster River High School. Creating the Math Challenge Club is my way of providing students eager to challenge themselves, while also inspiring others who are interested in taking their math skills to the next level.”
With Ms. Farwell’s help, Yash led the club’s four sessions and guided 3rd grade students on an exciting journey aiming to solve challenging math problems.
“I enjoyed working with Yash and watching him bring his passion for mathematics to younger students”, said Mrs. Farwell. “It is inspiring to see how much he has grown since graduating from Mast Way, and witness how much progress was made by the students who attended his Math Challenge Club.”
Math Challenge Club sessions start with Yash walking students through a warm-up activity.
Students are then invited to work on solving a challenging math problem.
