When Oyster River Middle School (ORMS) 6th grade students returned from school after the winter break in January, Art Teacher Joe Boucher had a special project for them. Shocked by the New Orleans tragedy on New Year’s Day, Mr. Boucher had the idea to work on clay clocks depicting the famous Water Meter Sewage plate.
The clocks are now for sale to raise money for first responders in NOLA, and to support nonprofit organizations that benefit the inner city's youth through arts programs.
Throughout the artistic process, students not only created inspiring art but learned about civic responsibility and how their work can positively impact the world around them.
Sixth-grade student Kendalyn said: "When you have a community that needs help, you help. We're a community with supplies and resources, so we want to help those in need. That's what you do. That is kind and it’s the right thing to do."
The clocks are made of clay and are being sold for $40.00 each. Those interested in supporting the fundraiser can contact Mr. Boucher directly.
Sixth-grade student Emily Yang worked on a clock to support the New Orleans community.
The clocks are now displayed in the Learning Commons and available for purchase.
Mr. Boucher provided a mold of the original plate for students to model.
